Cyprus honoured by visit of Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia

His Holiness Kirill has visited Cyprus before, however this was his first trip to the island after election to the patriarchal see. He arrived on 8 June to a three day programme of official appointments, greeted and guided by Chrysostomos II, Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus and Archbishop of Nea Justiniana and All Cyprus, the members of the Holy Synod and Vyacheslav Shumsky, Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus.

Amongst the ceremonial duties, His Holiness Kirill attended a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Cyprus Church, a requiem mass at Nicosia prison, a memorial service for members of the Ottoman resistance and Cyprus liberation at the military cemetery and he visited Famagusta.

Cyprus’s President Christofias also joined His Holiness for the consecration of the foundation stone that will form the first Russian Church in Cyprus. The church of Saint Nicolas in Limassol will be the only sacred place belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate in Cyprus. As His Holiness blessed people individually, he also blessed Cyprus with the acceptance of a gift to the Russian Orthodox Christians from the Church of Cyprus; a holy relic from the Church of St. Lazarus in Larnaca.
