Cypriot - Russian Festival at its best!

Celebrating the strong links between the two countries, the seventh Cypriot- Russian Festival took place in Limassol on the 9th June 2012. Secretary of State, Erato Kozakou-Marcoulli welcomed guests as the representative of the President of Cyprus, who was at the time attending the consecration of the future Russian church of Saint Nicholas in Limassol by the Patriarch of All Russia Kirill. Addressing the crowds with the President’s words, Mr. Kozakou-Marcoulli said, “Cyprus has become a meeting place for the rich culture, traditions and customs of both nations”.

 

Other speakers included Natalia Kardash, the chairwoman of the organizing committee, the Demarch of Limassol, Andreas Christou, the Minister-Counselor of the Russian Embassy in Cyprus, Yuri Kazakov, and the deputy director of the agency “Rossotrudnichestvo” Georgiy Muradov, who delivered the message of the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Andrei Denisov. 
 
With formalities over, the festival was opened and over 600 people enjoyed the many attractions. On the main stage, an eight hour marathon concert included talented shows from community kid’s and adult’s groups of dance, singing and acting, with the finale performance by famous Russian pop star, Anita Tsoi. The side stage was dedicated to the “Russian Village”, a series of folk based dance acts, and children had great fun painting Russian dolls and watching the life-size characters of the Russian fairytale “Masha and the Bear”.
 
All along the seafront Molos Parade, games, sports, painting, mime artists, vintage cars, stamp collections, craft stalls, plus photographic and art exhibitions were enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Festival organizers from the newspaper, “Vestnik Kipra” arranged a stunning fireworks display to finish the day and with the celebrations declared a resounding success, we look forward to next year as the Festival grows in size and status.
